Frequently Asked Questions

  • All services provided at Source fall under your out-of-network occupational therapy benefits. Payment is due at the time of your visit, and we’ll provide a detailed superbill for you to submit to insurance so your insurance can reimburse you directly.

  • Pelvic floor therapy isn’t a quick fix — it’s an investment in you (or your kid’s) long-term health. Most people start with 8-12 weekly sessions, then we reassess and adjust based on progress. Depending on your body and your goals, care can last several months to a year and may be something you revisit during different seasons of life.

But let's be real… when the choice is between new extensions or something like not peeing yourself when you laugh (or finally ditching the nighttime sheet changes), the winner’s pretty obvious.

  • Short answer: No.

We don’t offer pelvic floor therapy packages — even though they sound tempting. Healing isn’t a punch card.

Your body doesn’t follow a preset number of visits, and neither do we. While we’ll give you an initial plan of care estimate, things often shift as your body responds and we uncover more along the way.

By skipping packages, we keep your care flexible, individualized, and based on what your body actually needs — not a fixed bundle of visits.

  • Nope! You don’t need a referral to get started with pelvic floor therapy. This means you can begin treatment right away — saving time, money, and often avoiding unnecessary tests or medications. The sooner we start addressing your symptoms, the sooner you’ll feel better. After your initial evaluation, we’ll create a personalized Plan of Care and share it with your provider (such as your doctor, OB-GYN, midwife, or chiropractor) so they stay in the loop about your progress.

  • We require at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment in order to avoid late cancellation fees. Our policy is as follows:

    • $100 for the first late cancellation (within 24 hours)

    • $175 for the second late cancellation

    • Full session fee for the third, after which continued scheduling will be re-evaluated due to our client waitlist.

“No-shows” are charged the full price of the missed appointment.

Before your first visit, all intake paperwork must be completed at least 24 hours prior to your appointment time. This allows us to thoroughly review your history and tailor your care from the very first session. Appointments without completed paperwork will be canceled and need to be rescheduled.

  • Pelvic Floor OT is all about connecting the dots between your pelvic floor, core, and everyday life. We look at how you sit, move, pee, poop, parent, breathe, rest, and even how you handle stress — because all of that affects how your pelvis functions.

We overlap a lot with pelvic floor PT — we both assess the muscles, help you reconnect with your body, and use tools like breathwork, manual therapy, and movement to get things working the way they should.

The difference? PTs tend to focus on the how — the strength, coordination, and mobility of the muscles themselves. OTs dive deeper into the why — the habits, routines, sensory patterns, and environmental factors that keep those symptoms coming back.

  • We’re not the fashion police, promise — but we do recommend something comfy and easy to move in! Think leggings, joggers, or loose shorts. For adults, bottoms that are simple to change or slip off make things smoother if we need to check how muscles are working. For kids, anything that’s easy to play and potty in is perfect. Basically, if you can move, breathe, and relax in it — you’re dressed just right.

General, Scheduling, Payment

Adults/Women

  • Not always. While an internal exam can provide valuable information about pelvic floor strength, coordination, and tension, it’s never required. At Source, care is always trauma-informed and guided by your comfort and consent. We’ll explain the purpose and benefits of the exam, what we’re looking for, and what it might tell us — but if you’re not comfortable, that’s completely okay. There’s still plenty we can learn and address through external assessment, education, and movement-based strategies.

  • Absolutely—we get it. Childcare can be hard to come by, especially with little ones or a brand-new baby. You’re welcome to bring your child to your appointment, and since we’re kid-savvy, we can usually rustle up a quiet activity to keep them busy. That said, if a child becomes too distracting and it starts to take away from your session, we may ask that future visits be child-free so you can soak up the full benefit of your care (you deserve it).

  • Great question—Pelvic floor therapy is very different from a regular medical appointment. As rehabilitation experts, we focus on how your body functions — how your pelvic floor, core, breath, and nervous system work together — rather than performing medical exams or procedures.

Our goal is to help you move, feel, and function better. Unlike other medical office’s, you won’t find foot stirrups, speculums, or encounter that awkward “scoot to the edge of the table” moment here. Evaluations are done in a comfortable, private setting with a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes your autonomy and comfort every step of the way.

  • Totally fine! You’re absolutely welcome to keep your appointment if you’re on your period — it’s a normal part of life and nothing to be embarrassed about.

We can adapt our session based on your comfort level and what feels right for your body that day. If you’d rather skip internal work or take things a little lighter, that’s perfectly okay too — your comfort always comes first.

  • Not. at. all. Pelvic floor therapy is about real bodies — and real bodies have hair, sweat, and natural smells. You never need to shave, wax, or worry about how you smell before a session. We care about your comfort and your progress, not your grooming routine!

Pediatrics

  • There are no internal exams (vaginal or rectal) in pediatric pelvic floor therapy. Only non-invasive, visual observation of the perineum is performed as needed to check for things like skin irritation, pelvic floor movement, and normal sensation or reflexes. A parent or authorized caregiver is always required to be present for the entire session.

Treatment may include fun, computer-assisted biofeedback exercises to help your child learn how to strengthen or relax their muscles, along with relaxation strategies, behavioral and dietary guidance, and a simple home program to support progress between sessions.

  • Yes, your other child or children can be present if needed — we understand childcare can be tricky! However, for your child’s comfort and privacy during certain parts of the session (such as a pelvic floor exam), or if siblings become a distraction, we may kindly ask that they step into another room or divert their eyes. This helps create a calm, focused environment so your child can get the most out of their session.

  • Yes! A parent or authorized caregiver must be present for your child’s entire appointment. This helps your child feel comfortable and ensures you’re part of the learning process — so you can understand the strategies, language, and routines we use and carry them over successfully.

  • Not an issue. Many of the children we work with are neurodivergent or experience behavioral challenges. In fact, these differences can often play a role in toileting difficulties. As an occupational therapist, I specialize in sensory integration, interoception (understanding body signals), and regulation strategies to help your child feel safe, understood, and in control. Every session is tailored to meet your child where they are — with patience, creativity, and care.

Pregnancy/ Postpartum

  • You can benefit from pelvic floor therapy at any stage of pregnancy! Whether you’re early on and want to prepare your body, in your third trimester managing pain or pressure, or anywhere in between, there’s so much we can do to support you.

Sessions may focus on posture, breathwork, pelvic mobility, relaxation, and preparing your pelvic floor for birth. It’s never too early (or too late) to start caring for your body during this chapter.

  • Uh YEAH! Birth prep is one of our favorite things to help with. Pelvic floor therapy can make a big difference in preparing your body for labor and delivery. We’ll work on breath mechanics, pelvic mobility, perineal relaxation, and body awareness — all to help you feel confident, informed, and in control. You’ll learn practical tools and positions for labor, ways to minimize tearing, and strategies to support recovery afterward.

  • You can start pelvic floor therapy as soon as you feel ready after birth — even before your six-week checkup, if medically cleared and comfortable. Early sessions often focus on gentle healing, breathwork, and reconnecting with your core and pelvic floor. If you’ve had a C-section or tearing, we’ll also support scar care and mobility when appropriate.

Whether you’re a few weeks or a few years postpartum, it’s never too late to start — your body deserves care and recovery at every stage.

  • Internal assessments are typically appropriate after six weeks postpartum, once you’ve had clearance from your medical provider and feel ready. Every body heals differently, so we’ll move at your pace and only with your full consent.

Sexual Wellness

  • Sex, Intimacy, and Sexuality OT is a specialized area of occupational therapy that looks at how sexual function, intimacy, and identity fit into your overall wellbeing and daily life. Whether you’re navigating pain, body changes, trauma, disability, or just wanting to reconnect with pleasure and confidence, this type of OT helps address the physical, emotional, and relational factors that shape your sexual health.

  • Yes! Your partner is absolutely welcome to be part of sessions — and depending on your goals, they may even be invited to join for education, communication, or connection-based exercises.

However, Sex, Intimacy, and Sexuality OT is designed to focus on you — your body, your comfort, and your experience. Sessions are centered around your individual needs and goals, so while partners can be involved, they’re never required.

  • No, you could already have MIND BLOWING sex and still greatly benfit from Sex, Intimacy, and Sexuality OT. This work isn’t just about fixing problems — it’s about deepening connection, understanding your body, and expanding comfort and confidence in your sexual wellbeing.

Whether you’re experiencing pain, navigating life changes, or simply want to feel more present and fulfilled, this therapy helps you explore what intimacy and pleasure mean for you in a supportive, judgment-free space.

  • Yes, gender inclusivity is foundational to who we are. Everyone deserves access to compassionate, informed care that honors their body and identity. We recognize that pelvic health looks different for every person, and we’re committed to creating a space where all genders feel seen, respected, and safe. From the language we use to the way we tailor each session, inclusivity guides everything we do — because your body, your story, and your comfort matter here.

  • No, your beliefs and values are an important part of your care. At Source, cultural humility is central to everything we do. We understand that everyone’s background shapes how they view sex, intimacy, and health, and we approach those perspectives with respect and curiosity.

You’re always in control of what feels comfortable to discuss or explore, and our goal is to create a safe space that honors your culture, values, and boundaries while still supporting your healing and goals.
